What Size Pool Table Should I Buy?

When purchasing a new pool table, there are several important factors to consider, especially when it comes to size. It's not just about whether the table will fit in the room; you also need to ensure that there is enough space around the table for players to shoot comfortably.

What is the Difference Between an 8’ Table and a 7’ Table?

Pool tables are NOT measured by their outside dimensions but rather by their playing surface. A pool tables playing surface is always twice as long as it is wide. We take this measurement from where we call, "point of cushions to point of cushion". You want to place your tape measure right where the ball would touch up on the rail, (not underneath the rail/cushion). An 8’ table's playing surface will measure 44" by 88", and is the most common pool table I have come across in people's homes. The playing surface dimensions of a 7’ table, will measure 39" x 78", and is the most common sized table that is at the bar. The main distinction lies in the playing experience each size offers.

Why Choose an 8’ Table?

Most pool table buyers opt for the larger 8’ table if they have the space available. The larger size provides a better playing experience, especially for those who are used to playing on standard-sized tables in professional settings.

When Should You Consider a 7’ Table?

If you have a smaller room or if you frequent bars where 7’ tables are the standard, a 7’ table might be the better choice for you. Playing on the same size table at home as you do in bars can help improve your game.

What Room Size is Ideal for Each Table?

For an 8’ table, the ideal room size would be 13 feet 4 inches by 17 feet. On the other hand, a 7’ table would fit well in a room measuring 12 feet 10 inches by 16 feet 2 inches.

What Cue Length Should You Use?

When choosing a pool cue, consider the size of your room. If you have any ‘tight’ spots around the table, opting for smaller cues, such as 52” or 48” in length, can help you maneuver more easily during gameplay.
